In the quiet rural community of Luwela, just outside Lilongwe, lives Samuel Chikaonda, a humble father and carpenter whose story reflects the true meaning of empowerment and transformation.
For many years, Samuel struggled to make ends meet. His small carpentry shop was his only source of income, but business was slow and tools were few. Most days, he could barely earn enough to provide for his family or pay school fees for his children.
“Life was really tough,” Samuel recalls. “I had the passion to work hard, but I didn’t have the tools or business knowledge to grow.”
Everything began to change when FESODEV introduced a community empowerment project in Luwela an initiative aimed at equipping men and women with vocational and entrepreneurial skills to improve their livelihoods. Samuel was selected to participate in carpentry and joinery training, where he also received hands-on lessons in business management, customer service, and time management.

Through the training, Samuel learned not only how to refine his carpentry craft but also how to manage his business effectively. He was later provided with a carpentry and joinery start-up kit, which gave him the tools and confidence to expand his workshop and take on bigger projects.
“FESODEV changed my life,” he says with gratitude. “Before the project, I could not even dream of running a successful business. Today, I can provide for my family, send my children to school, and save money for the future.”
With improved skills and better equipment, Samuel’s carpentry business began to thrive. He started receiving more clients from nearby communities, building furniture and home fittings that met professional standards. His improved customer service and time management skills helped him build trust and attract repeat customers.
The success of his business opened new doors. Samuel has since purchased a piece of land where he plans to build rental houses, creating another source of income for his family. He has also started raising goats, chickens, and pigs, diversifying his income and securing his household’s food supply.
“I am now a happy father,” Samuel says proudly. “I never thought I would reach this level. With the training and support I received from FESODEV, my life and my family’s future are secure.”
A Story of Growth and Independence
Samuel’s story is a clear example of how FESODEV’s vocational and entrepreneurship programs are transforming lives in Malawi’s rural communities.
By combining skills training, business education, and start-up support, the program empowers individuals to move from dependency to self-reliance.
Today, Samuel is not just a carpenter — he’s a business owner, a provider, and an inspiration to others in his community. His journey shows that with the right skills and opportunity, anyone can turn struggle into success.
✨ From a struggling carpenter to a thriving entrepreneur Samuel’s journey is proof that empowerment creates lasting change.
