James Makumbi Redefining Ability Through Design

In the quiet community where he lives, James Makumbi has become a symbol of strength, creativity, and resilience.
Born and living with a physical disability, James faced many barriers that limited his participation in social and economic activities. For years, he relied on small tailoring work from home, but with limited resources and exposure, his business could not grow.

When FESODEV began conducting a Needs Assessment for the Artisan Livelihood Project, community members pointed the team to James’s home. Because of his mobility challenges, he could not easily move around, but his reputation as a talented tailor was already well known in the area.

During the visit, James expressed a strong desire to join the program. Despite his physical challenges, his passion and determination were evident. He registered for the training and became an active participant throughout the project’s duration.

The Artisan Livelihood Project provided participants with practical skills in Tailoring and Fashion Design, as well as training in entrepreneurship, customer service, and business management. James attended every session with commitment and enthusiasm eager to learn new techniques and improve his craft.

“As a person living with disability, I never thought I could be included in programs with people without disabilities,” James shared. “FESODEV made me realize that I also have value  I can learn, create, and contribute to my community.”

Upon completion of the program, James proudly graduated with a Certificate of Completion and received a start-up sewing machine to support his business.
Since then, his workshop has grown, and he now serves as one of the most trusted tailors in his community. Customers appreciate his professionalism, creativity, and attention to detail and his work has become a source of pride and income for his family.

“Socially, I have been motivated,” James said. “My business has improved, and people respect me more. I feel part of society — I am no longer left behind.”

Inclusion in Action

James’s journey embodies FESODEV’s belief that disability is not inability.
Through inclusive programs like the Artisan Livelihood Project, FESODEV continues to reach individuals who are often overlooked ensuring that everyone, regardless of ability, has access to opportunity, dignity, and self-reliance.

Today, James stands as a professional designer and an inspiration to many, reminding his community that true empowerment begins when everyone is included.

Through skill, opportunity, and belief, James has turned his limitations into leadership — and his talent into a livelihood.
