Edith’s Story Lighting the Path to Her Future

In the rural community of Chadzunda in Blantyre, where electricity is scarce and educational opportunities are often out of reach, lived a determined young girl named Edith Saizi. Like many girls in her community, Edith faced daily challenges on her journey to pursue education long distances, lack of proper study materials, and limited family resources.

Between 2013 and 2015, Edith became one of the beneficiaries of FESODEV’s Tawoloka Girls Educational Project, a life changing initiative designed to empower girls through education, mentorship, and small enterprise support. The project, sponsored by Links International UK, focused on removing the barriers that prevented girls from staying in school and achieving their dreams.

For Edith, this support became a turning point in her life.

Because her community had no access to electricity, studying at night was nearly impossible. Through the Tawoloka project, FESODEV provided her with a solar lamp a simple but powerful tool that allowed her to continue her studies after sunset.
Additionally, she received a bicycle, which eased the burden of traveling nearly 15 kilometers each day to attend secondary school. This small gesture made a huge difference, saving her time, energy, and ensuring she could attend classes consistently.

The project didn’t stop there. Alongside material support, Edith and other girls participated in empowerment seminars and Micro-Enterprise Development (MED) training sessions, where they learned how to manage small income-generating activities. These sessions helped the girls develop confidence, leadership, and financial responsibility vital tools for their future independence.

“The solar lamp helped me study at night, and the bicycle made it easier to reach school,” Edith recalls. “But most importantly, FESODEV made me believe that my dreams were valid that I could become someone.”

With determination and hard work, Edith excelled in her studies. The consistent encouragement and mentorship she received from the project gave her the strength to persevere even when challenges arose.

Her perseverance paid off in 2024, Edith proudly graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Clinical Medicine from the Malawi College of Health Sciences. It was a moment of immense pride not only for her family but also for the FESODEV team, who were honored to be invited to her graduation ceremony to celebrate her success.

“Seeing Edith walk across that stage was a powerful reminder of why we do what we do,” shared one FESODEV staff member. “She represents hope, resilience, and the limitless potential that education can unlock.”

A Legacy of Hope

Edith’s story is more than a personal triumph it is a reflection of what is possible when girls are given equal opportunities to learn, grow, and thrive. Through the Tawoloka Girls Educational Project, supported by Links International UK, dozens of girls like Edith have been empowered with education, mentorship, and resources that help them shape a brighter future.

Today, Edith serves as an inspiration to her community a living testimony that when girls are empowered with education and support, they not only change their own lives but also uplift generations to come.

From walking long distances in darkness to lighting her path toward a medical degree Edith’s journey embodies the true spirit of empowerment through education.
